FIRE Speech Rating
College of the Holy Cross earns a Red speech code rating from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE).College of the Holy Cross has been given the speech code rating Red. A red light university has at least one policy that both clearly and substantially restricts freedom of speech.
FIRE evaluates colleges and universities' "speech codes," or written free speech policies, for how well they protect students' freedom of speech. ACTA believes an institution's commitment to free expression correlates with its commitment to academic excellence, facilitated through the free exchange of ideas.
According to its mission statement, the College of the Holy Cross "seeks to build a community marked by freedom, mutual respect, and civility. Because the search for meaning and value is at the heart of intellectual life, critical examination of fundamental religious and philosophical questions is integral to liberal arts education."
